We perform magic with first tv ad for Mytax.co.nz

Windup Bird, together with Jason Dorday Photographer, has created a tv campaign for Mytax.co.nz.

There are three commercials in the series: the first, The Magician, went to-air at the beginning of the new tax year, April 1.

Jason and I aimed for a bit of real life crossover in these ads – we wanted to document what people do. Hence Jon’s name as a subtitle and the use of his photos; he is not a hired actor, he really is a magician. This is a direct link to the radio ads I’ve produced for Mytax.co.nz, where I use the audio of real …

Mytax.co.nz “The Pink One”

This is another ad for Mytax.co.nz. This is a straight voice over and it’s strength is in the script and production.
Quentin and Tanya do a fantastic job voicing their ads. I had the piece of signature music especially composed for my client and I think it works really well and is another component in helping their ads stand out.

Mytax.co.nz “Serious”

This radio commercial is one from a recent series I’ve written and produced for Mytax.co.nz, using audio from phone calls informing customers about their tax refunds.
These ads have worked extremely well for my client and they sound wonderful on-air.

Jenkin A-Lign Timber “Smell This”

I wrote a series of commercials for Jenkin A-Lign – two 15 seconders and two 30′s.

Jenkin have a weather-tight timber cladding product and it’s been around for ages, 80 years I think (without checking).

The premise of the commercials is: “Stick to what you know”.

The character in the beginning is always being asked his opinion on clothes, perfume, physical appearance and so forth by his wife (or girlfriend). He always gives brutally honest (read: wrong) answers. Hence, stick to what you know.

This guy’s a carpenter and what he knows is timber. And he knows you can’t beat Jenkin A-Lign …

Jenkin A-Lign Timber “A Night Out”

Jenkin A-Lign Timber “Vertical/Horizontal”

Jenkin A-Lign Timber “Silly Question”

NZBCF: “Dolly”

“Dolly” was inspired by an interview on the radio.  The daughter of the woman telling her story actually did bandage her dolls as her mother’s treatment progressed.

As with the other two ads in this series, I’ve had the actors be matter-of-fact because the emotion isn’t overt, it’s in the relating of the experience.

Victoria and Kayla, as the mother and daughter, couldn’t be better. They aren’t professional voices so they bring believability to their roles. The voice over for this campaign is done by Jeanette Thomas and she does a terrific job. Pete Ashdown has done some great work on this …

NZBCF: “Captain”

Another in the NZBCF series.

This ad tells its own story.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
